A new series of workshops, organized by the HUMANIST VCE
The workshop on Resilience Engineering in the frame of road transport is the first of a series of workshops organised by HUMANIST VCE. Their aim is to gather the community of Intelligent Transport Systems in order to exchange and discuss topical issues related to Human Factors. The identification of joint actions to undertake to progress towards solutions is an expected outcome of these workshops.
Each workshop consists in a one-day meeting dedicated to one specific topic, including lectures given by recognised specialists of the domain, and a panel discussion between lecturers and with the attendees.
Resilience engineering to support safe mobility in road transport

Resilience engineering is a paradigm for safety management that focuses on how to help people cope with complexity under pressure to achieve success. [1]
This means the ability of systems to anticipate and adapt to the potential for surprise and failure.
The initial steps in developing a practice of Resilience Engineering have focused on methods and tools:
- To analyse, measure and monitor the resilience of organisations in their operating environment.
- To improve an organisation’s resilience vis-à-vis the environment.
- To model and predict the short- and long-term effects of change and line management decisions on resilience and therefore on risk. [1]
Considering safety a core value, successful innovative approaches applied within other safety critical systems where people deal with uncertainty should therefore be explored in order to develop a methodological framework for an appropriate further application within the road transport system.
